Methodology and Approach
Before creating our own sequences, let us explore this approach a bit further. First, the training data set is a large collection of videos. During training, the authors extract frame pairs from the same video and feed them to the model. The model tries to reconstruct the video by somehow learning what are the key points in the pairs and how to represent the motion between them.
To this end, the framework consists of two models: the motion estimator and the video generator. Initially, the motion estimator tries to learn a latent representation of the motion in the video. This is encoded as motion-specific key point displacements (where key points can be the position of eyes or mouth) and local affine transformations. This combination can model a larger family of transformations instead of only using the key point displacements. The output of the model is two-fold: a dense motion field and an occlusion mask. This mask defines which parts of the driving video can be reconstructed by warping the source image, and which parts should be inferred by the context because they are not present in the source image (e.g. the back of the head). For instance, consider the fashion GIF below. The back of each model is not present in the source picture, thus, it should be inferred by the model.
Next, the video generator takes as input the output of the motion detector and the source image and animates it according to the driving video; it warps that source image in ways that resemble the driving video and inpatient the parts that are occluded. Figure 1 depicts the framework architecture.

WeWork’s long-rumored IPO was announced this week by way of one of the most talked-about S-1s in recent history. The We Company, the parent of WeWork, released an S-1 loaded both with new information about the company’s financials and with some made-for-Twitter language. (“We dedicate this to the power of We — greater than any one of us, but inside each of us” is in the document’s opening.)
Among the more relevant financial revelations:
- WeWork is growing fast. Between 2017 and 2018, revenue doubled to an astounding $1.7 billion.
- But its base profit is thin. Of that $1.7 billion made in 2018, WeWork spent $1.5 billion just on operating its locations.
- And it’s hemorrhaging money. In the first 6 months of 2019 alone, WeWork lost nearly $690 million.
Whatever the financial implications of The We Company’s S-1, the company reports a rapidly growing worldwide customer base of 537,000 members. WeWork might have some questionable economics and dramatic language, but co-working, as a trend, clearly isn’t some flash in the pan.
And while WeWork may be a giant in the co-working space, it is far from the only player. While there are other co-working franchises competing directly with WeWork, such as IWG (a flexible workspace provider founded in 1989 as Regus), there are also many other niches within the broader co-working market:
- Community-specific co-working spaces. The Wing, which WeWork is an investor in, is a network of co-working and community spaces designed for women.
- Co-living companies. Companies like Quarters, Roam, Outsite, and The We Company’s WeLive combine the concept of co-working spaces with shared living spaces
- Co-working apps. Deskpass and LiquidSpace give co-workers access to a variety of spaces, while Yardi Kube and Cobot make it easy for business owners to manage a co-working space.
And with more and more companies hiring for remote work, flexible working spaces are only going to become more necessary, making co-working spaces both a vital service and an exciting market. WeWork’s future might be a topic of debate, but co-working is very much here to stay.
UpDate: The We Company, better known as WeWork, disclosed that it is unwinding a much-criticized deal that awarded CEO Adam Neumann $5.9 million for use of “we” trademarks. The company also said it intends to appoint Frances Frei, a Harvard Business School professor and consultant, to its currently all-male board.

I see a lot of startups these days who are indeed starting with sustainability just built in from the beginning. We have a different challenge, which is we are retrofitting an old model. But at Nike we’re lucky, because we like to disrupt ourselves.
Now, we’re a really fast-growing company, so we have a massive footprint. We serve customers all over the world, we have a value chain that stretches around the world. If you narrow it down, the first thing we do is we obsess the data. So we obsess, where is our footprint? So then we narrow it down further and we say, well, what are those key materials? Well, it’s cotton and it’s polyester and it’s leather.
Well, how can we think about reducing their footprint? And that’s where our innovation acumen comes in. So we come up with solutions around moving to organic cotton or better cotton. We’re even looking at radical alternatives to cotton. We’re in the factories, we’re, even down to the raw materials, thinking about how can we do this differently? How can we reduce those limits in that old thinking and transform and serve the customer?
