Web Summit 2022

Yes, South by Southwest (SXSW) is a unique conference blending tech, startups, music, film, and interactive media industries. If you’re interested in similar events, here are some options:

  1. CES (Consumer Electronics Show): This annual trade show organized by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) is a great place to see the latest in tech and consumer electronics.
  2. Collision: Run by the same team as Web Summit, Collision is held in Toronto, Canada. It has a similar blend of tech, culture, and entertainment, attracting some of the biggest names in tech, politics, sport, and entertainment.
  3. TechCrunch Disrupt: Hosted in San Francisco, this conference is well-known for its startup competition, the Startup Battlefield. It’s a great place to network and see what’s cutting-edge in the tech industry.
  4. Slush: Based in Helsinki, Finland, Slush is a not-for-profit event aimed at creating and helping the next generation of groundbreaking entrepreneurs.
  5. TNW Conference (The Next Web): This event based in Amsterdam is about technology, business, and culture, offering keynote talks, workshops, and networking events.
  6. Web Summit: Based in Lisbon, Portugal, Web Summit has grown into one of the world’s largest tech conferences. It attracts a wide range of attendees, including startups, investors, and thought leaders.

Remember, preparing for these conferences is key. Work on your pitch, define clear goals, and research the attendees and events to make the most of these opportunities.

I was inspired to create this list by an article on another website, where there are more technical conferences and information is updated more often.

Web Summit:

Best Sides: Web Summit is one of the largest tech conferences in the world, which means exposure to a massive network of potential investors, collaborators, and customers. The conference provides numerous networking opportunities, and it features an exclusive event for startups called “PITCH,” where you can showcase your venture.

Challenges: Because of its size, it might be overwhelming for first-time attendees. It can be challenging to stand out among thousands of startups.

Travel: Lisbon is a major European destination with good flight connectivity from both the US and other European countries.

Collision 2024

Best Sides: Like Web Summit, Collision offers extensive networking opportunities. The conference features “Collision PITCH,” a platform for startups to present their ideas.

Challenges: Again, the size of the event can be a challenge for startups trying to make a mark.

Travel: Toronto is well-connected with major US and European cities via air travel.

TechCrunch Disrupt 2024

Best Sides: TechCrunch Disrupt is famous for its “Startup Battlefield” competition where startups compete for a significant cash prize and media coverage. It’s a great platform to get noticed by potential investors. Similar to SXSW.

Challenges: The competition is tough, and getting selected for the “Startup Battlefield” is no small feat.

Travel: Being in San Francisco, it’s easily accessible for US-based startups. Direct flights are also available from major European cities.

Slush

Best Sides: Slush is startup-focused and fosters a unique, community-oriented atmosphere. It offers “Slush 100 Pitch Competition” for early-stage startups.

Challenges: As the event is hosted in Finland in late fall, attendees should prepare for short days and cold weather.

Travel: Helsinki has good air connectivity, but it might require a stopover for attendees traveling from the US.

CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Vegas

Every January

Best Sides: CES is an ideal platform if your startup is in the consumer electronics sector. The Eureka Park marketplace at CES is a unique space for startups to unveil a new product, service, or idea.

Challenges: CES is enormous and predominantly focused on established companies, so it might be challenging to capture attention as a startup.

Travel: Located in Las Vegas, it’s easy to reach for US-based startups. Direct and indirect flights are available from European cities.

TNW Conference (The Next Web)

Best Sides: TNW Conference is a great place for startups, with its pitch competition, exhibition spaces, and plenty of networking events.

Challenges: While the event is tech-focused, it’s not as startup-centric as some of the other conferences on this list.

Travel: Amsterdam is well-connected with most major cities in the US and Europe.
