When it comes to technologies, their main goals are to offer users a unique digital experience, satisfy their needs and provide a new way of interaction with a digital product. When a person uses an app everything should feel maximally natural and convenient. And to reach such high level of users’ engagement some unique methods and techniques of User Experience Design (UX) should be applied. 

UX itself is derived from the physical world, conceptual design, and ergonomics and has its own design principles. It’s not critical if the addressee is your friend, but if it is a business partner, your reputation and professionalism can be questioned. To avoid such situations and improve user experience, Google added a pop-up alert allowing users to change access permissions without leaving the mailing system. 

All iPhone owners appreciated the advantages of Siri long ago. Like many other users I like scheduling things using Siri and as a designer I noticed the main UX principles that were applied by Apple. Let’s imagine you decide to ask Siri to remind you to do something tomorrow and you are doing it after midnight. In this case the system will ask you to choose whether under “tomorrow” you mean this day or the next day (the exact dates will be specified on your display). This option is totally user-oriented and allows you to avoid numerous errors. Therefore it ensures great user experience.

Augmented and Virtual Reality. Although this trend appeared in 2019, it’s only in a new decade it reached the peak of its popularity. All business niches like education, healthcare, gaming, real estate and many more resort to AR. It is not enough anymore to create a good application, it should be somehow complimented with AR technology. The user experience should feel natural and real, which means that the designers need to pay more attention to creating overall layout, scaling the objects, setting reference point, simplifying the interaction. 

5G introduction. People started talking about 5G at the end of 2018 and now this breakthrough is real and closer to our lives as never before. According to the GSM Association report “The number of 5G connections will reach 1.4 billion by 2025 – 15 percent of the global total”. This means the beginning of the new epoch when the Internet of Things will blossom. Numerous devices will be united into one ecosystem and such trend will influence the designers and UX they work upon. Taking into account the main feature of 5G (which is speed), the approach to the design will be changed. All heavy components will be excluded, the design will be light. 

Frameless devices. Each year the displays of our devices got bigger and bigger, while the frames were decreasing. Now no one is surprised by the look of a frameless phone but this shift brought numerous changes and new requirements into the design sphere. To create an effective UX every designer should take into account screen space and offer functional and yet visually appealing design. The visual part needs to be impeccable, so pixelation should be forgotten and aspect ratio should be carefully preserved. As the display size increases, it is harder to manage a phone using one hand. So when it comes to convenience, it is a good choice to replace usual tapping with gesturing and move navigation bar to the bottom of the screen as it is more convenient and feels natural. 

Personalized content. Have you noticed how many apps and websites added the recommendation section? Personalization is definitely a new highly popular trend. Whatever you are doing using your device – searching for movies or music, listening to podcasts or reading e-books – you will likely be offered a list of suggestions formed according to your previous choices. Frankly speaking, best UX practices used to achieve this in 2020 are generally the same as in 2019. A designer should refine mobile app navigation design. When it comes to colors, it is better to use shiny ones for vital buttons. To improve UX it is important to add user educational practices, tooltips and various hints. And what is more important, the user should understand all app possibilities right from the start. So the designer’s task is to familiarize the audience with them through UX.

You may say that a couple of mentioned trends are not completely new and they were heard of previously. But the thing is, all those trends became popular only now when the devices became more complex with the new standards and demands. UX trends constantly keep changing and bring new challenges to all designers. It is hard to predict what awaits us in a year or two, but what I can say for sure is that every design challenge is a perfect way to improve your skills and find a new creative solution. Before diving into the stylesheet, make sure you set each field label with the appropriate column class. Exp: Using gf_left_half and gf_right half for two columns and using gf_left_third gf_middle_third and gf_right_third if you are using three columns.

Now, you’ll need to set the footer to display inline-block, and have the form’s body float left in order to have the submit button next to the field labels. You are going to need to tweak the width and padding, and these values will vary depending on the layout specifications of your site. Google Meet now with Grid View feature for the iOS mobile version

Google Meet is getting new support for iOS; the iOS version of the app will soon get the Grid View feature. The Grid feature displays all participants in a call at once.

This feature is not brand new. The grid view feature is already available on the web version of the service, but it did not have the same feature for the iOS mobile version.

Google announced this change in a recent tweet via the Google Workspace handle, which states: “Have a bigger impact on a smaller screen with #GoogleMeet tile view on your mobile devices, rolling out now on iOS and coming soon to Android!”

Grid View’s image accompanies the tweet on mobile devices, which clearly shows all the people engaged in a single video call.

Like the web version, Grid View in Google Meet for mobile shows each participant’s names in the bottom left corner. It highlights participants speaking with a blue outline around their image and an icon in the top right corner.

However, Google has not explicitly mentioned the upper limit for joining in the Grid View feature conversation. Still, the number of participants will likely be limited to 8 people. The feature will most likely switch participants displayed on the grid based on their activity.

As mentioned earlier, the feature is currently rolling out to Google Meet on iOS; the Android version of the same app, hopefully, will soon be launched.

Although Google has not officially mentioned any dates, it is expected that it will be rolled out for the Android version in the upcoming days.

The new Grid View support comes just weeks after Google added a green room to the video conferencing service, which lets users check their audio and video quality before joining a call.

Rem vs Em vs Px: When to use these units

Introduction to rem, em, and px

I will be solving one of the common confusion which every UI developer will face in choosing the css unit to use either px or em or rem.

Basic font-size a browser has 16px or 12pt (points).

If you’re familiar with web designing, you would have undoubtedly heard of these terms. The best practice of typography on the web is to use the relative units of remem, and px.

Most of the popular frameworks are updating the design with rem or em unit. We have popular Twitter Bootstrap framework 3 which earlier worked on pixels but with Bootstrap 4 now in the market even it has updated its typography with rem/em.

In this article, we will discuss, what exactly are rem, em and px, and how to use them.

What is Rem?

It stands for “Root em”. It is a relative unit of CSS and translated by the browser to pixels (px). When rem is used on the font-size in the root element, it represents its initial value. If we set the font-size:16px of the root <html> element, then font-size of paragraph will be 1rem. This implies that

1rem=16px 

 If we change the font-size of root element from 16px to 20px, then 1rem would be equal to 20px.

The font-size of the paragraph here is 1rem. If we want to set font-size as 18px for the paragraph, then we can calculate the font-size as:

Similarly, we can also calculate the pixels from rem.
Suppose we set the font-size:16px of root HTML element, then we would count it as:

When to Use Rem?

Because the content should adjust to the size of the device, it is important that your font adjusts too. 

If we want to keep the font-size responsive to the device, then we must change the root <html> element.
It is always good to create responsive web designs.

What is Em?

Em is a relatively flexible and scalable unit of typography. It is equal to the font-size specified to the parent element. Your browser translates em to pixels. It can turn out to be a tricky part.

The exact value is determined by the font size of the parent element. It gets complicated when we start nesting elements deeply. In such a case we have to multiply all the available values to determine the actual value of the child element. 

Let’s say we have a <div> element. Inside the <div> we have a <h1> tag and a paragraph <p>.
if we set the font-size:16px of the parent <div>.

  font-size:16px;
}

Then we have the font-size of <h1> as 2em. This means font-size of <h1> element is relative to its parent <div>.

If we want to set <h1> font-size equal to 30px in em, then we can calculate the font-size in em like this, 30px/16px=1.875em.

What are the uses of Em?

The main problem is that em is relative to the font-size of its parent element. If we want to change the font-size of an element, then we have to change the font-size of its parent element.

By using em, we can create components on the page that respond automatically, should the font size change. 

Let’s say if we want to change font-size of <h1> in mobile or in tablet,

What is Pixel?

Pixel is an absolute and fixed-size unit in CSS. Although the size of a pixel isn’t always the same, the font-size, margin, and padding in pixel(px) remain same for all the screens.

Pixels are easily translatable. For example if we sets the font size 24px to an <h1> element then it is always 24px for all screens and devices.

  font-size: 18px;
}

And if we set the font size to 18px for a <p> element then it would always be 24px for all screens and devices.

We use the pixels as an absolute unit, and it remains same for all screens.

Many agencies have tried to recruit groups of participants from diverse demographic backgrounds to avoid group think behavior among the groups.

Friends group where a group of friends is invited is also on the rise. It is believed to be good for idea generation.

Card Sorting

Card sorting is a method commonly used to aid the design of information architecture, workflows, menu structure or website navigation paths. The researchers will first write down the key elements or concepts on index cards. The users will then reorganize the cards to establish structures or relationship.

Sales Analytics or Web Analytics

All historical and current raw data from audience demographics, page visits, bounce rate to sales performance can be measured and analyzed to provide key insights into user behaviors.

Competitor Analysis

2. Start Designing with User Inputs

Users may think of the appearance of a website or product when we talk about design. They will describe it as pretty or not pretty.

User Journey Map

It includes the personas, time frame, and actions for each stage, touch points and sales channels, emotions, and experience.

Storyboards

A storyboard is a comic strip used to capture a user’s interaction with a product or service. It allows researchers and stakeholders alike to visualize and brainstorm.

3. Wireframing
